The Jennings Hotel & Spa, Joseph, Ore
In its colorful, hundred-year history, The Jennings Hotel has seen life as a tattoo parlour and boarding house, serving the mountain-side community of Joseph, Oregon. Built by Edith Hall Jennings, in honour of her late husband, Charles Jennings in 1910, the two-storey brick building was adopted in 2014 by artist and self-proclaimed ‘accidental hotelier’ Greg Hennes, who has transformed the frayed-at-the-edges space into a local retreat of international standing, filled with craft, community, and card games.
Each of the hotel’s 12 rooms was renovated with heart by a different artist, designer and friend of Hennes' (Brendon Farrell, Ashley Tackett, Chris Brown, to name a few). The first room was completed back in 2015, with all-but-one now open to guests, available to book on Airbnb. Because of the manifold creative vision employed throughout the space, it possesses not just one identity, but many. Nordic design notes fuse with flourishes of Oregonian tradition; a minimalist Soren chair by Coil + Drift may nestle up next to a rustic quilt hand stitched on-site by artist Zena Verda Pesta (one of many artists who have taken up residency at The Jennings).
