Plastic and thus, plastic waste, has become a troubling fact of modern convenience. In 2015, single-use plastic packaging accounted for 54% of the world’s plastic waste – a figure that eco-conscious retailers, restaurants and other consumer establishments are working to put a dent in as the movement to eschew the use of plastic bottles, straws, food containers and bags gains steady momentum.
While the magnitude of decades’ worth of ubnridled plastic use may seem too much to bear, a newly launched personal care label By Humankind is nobly taking it upon itself to retool the usual cycle of making products with single-use plastic right from the get-go. Hailing from the United Kingdom, By Humankind currently peddles three products – a refillable deodorant, mouthwash tablets that you can dissolve in water and a shampoo bar - that are each eliminates plastic packaging as much as possible. Formulated using clean ingredients that have also been backed by science to outperform many leading brands, By Humankind’s product offering is as safe for personal use as its packaging is for the planet.
Founded by Brian Bushell and Joshua Goodman, By Humankind takes a common sense approach to personal care, while keeping both eyes on the plastic waste crisis. Apart from each of the product’s efficacious all-natural formulas, By Humankind’s eye-catching packaging inspires its users to get on board with keeping, reusing and refilling their bottles and containers with its thoughtful model.
Available to purchase online, first-time customers By Humankind initially receive their products in compostable packaging. Shampoo bars are wrapped in paper thus eliminating the need for plastic bottles, while single-portion mouthwash tablets and refillable deodorant sticks are stored in reusable containers that are guaranteed for lifetime use. Its deodorant refills are also particularly of note. Packed in patent-pending, first-of-its-kind paper pods that can be fitted snugly into a container, it builds upon pre-existing refill cartridges For every one of these plastic containers sold, By Humankind pledges $1 per container to removing plastic waste from our oceans thus offsetting its plastic footprint. Refills can be ordered as per needed or by a personalized subscription schedule.
All of this would be for naught if By Humankind’s products weren’t divine to use. In addition to its products’ elegant, minimal design, which are worthy of prime bathroom shelf space, it’s attractive range of natural scents and flavours, which includes lemongrass, thyme and lemon lavender for shampoo and mint, spearmint and an assorted mix for its pH-normalising mouthwash, and either unscented or eucalyptus-infused deodorant, also makes you want to keep them around.
